HIVA–KU Leuven and DGD Cooperation and Development Aid jointly organized a workshop as part of the BeFind consortium on ‘Contributory social protection for informal workers: CBHI in Senegal and Tanzania’. During this workshop, researchers Dr. Boris Verbrugge and Adeline Ajuaye presented the findings from their study on community-based health insurance (CBHI) as a mechanism for mobilizing resources from the informal economy, and for increasing access to health care for informal workers. Using case study evidence from Senegal and Tanzania, they identified challenges facing CBHI-schemes when reaching out to the informal economy, and the strategies they use to confront these challenges. This presentation was followed by reactions from Enabel (Paul Bossyns) and civil society (Pieter van Wolvelaer, CM / WSM) and a roundtable discussion between the workshop participants. There were approximately 20 participants, including people from DGD and other government services, academic researchers, and representatives from civil society.
